Exploring beer tourism

We all know that beer is a popular drink but did you know that breweries are becoming increasingly popular tourist attractions?

Recently Damelin West Rand Conference & Events and Game Ranging learners had the opportunity to visit the SAB World of Beer in Newtown, Johannesburg, and find out more about this tourism trend while learning about the art of brewing the perfect beer.

Ranked as one of South Africa’s top two tourist experiences, the SAB’s World of Beer was opened by former President Nelson Mandela on 15 May 1995 in SAB’s centenary year. The World of Beer is also a unique venue for conferences or functions, a fact our Conference & Events students were sure to take note of!

Internationally breweries are starting to enjoy the kind of interest from tourists once reserved only for wine farms and here in South Africa the SAB World of Beer receives nearly 50 000 visitors annually.

Our learners enjoyed the 90-minute tour which included talk about the heritage of beer in South Africa, a 3D presentation, a detailed look into the art of beer brewing and a walk through the greenhouse. They rounded off the tour with a beer and enjoyed a relaxed afternoon socialising… after all, life shouldn’t be all work and no play!
