Described by Damelin West Rand staff as being reliable, hard-working and having a positive attitude, Tshepo completed our two-year Media Design & Technology course and dreams of being a graphic designer or architect. “I’m looking for a job in graphic design but lately I’ve been inspired by architectural design and am contemplating a career in architecture,” says Tsepho.

Tshepo received the Leadership Award in recognition of his academic performance, active participation in campus life and social responsibility projects, and ability to lead. His advice for new students is to the point, “Work hard and be determined to succeed.”

“Tshepo is a kind person who cares about the less fortunate. His passion for people and the example he set on campus, made him truly deserving of the prestigious Damelin West Rand Leadership Award,” says , “Tshepo was involved in many of our social responsibility projects and was always willing to assist during campus events. ”
In order to be considered for the Damelin West Rand Leadership Award, a student needs to meet the following criteria:

• A high academic standard
• Active participation in campus activities
• Excellent general conduct on campus and positive interaction with fellow students and course facilitators
• The ability to take initiative and showcase his or her leadership skills

“I loved being able to give back through Damelin West Rand’s social responsibility projects and particularly enjoyed volunteering with Project Hope,” says Tshepo about the programme which aims to empower the people of the Munsieville community, “because I come from a similar background, giving back to an impoverished community is a good thing in my mind.”

Tshepo says the best part of student life on campus was interacting with so many different people. “It was great to be around people with different personalities and opinions. I learnt so much from my fellow students!”

With a mind for design and heart for helping others, we believe Tshepo is just the kind of young leader South Africa needs!

Why is it that some people achieve so much while others do so little? You might say that achievers are well-connected or that they have had more opportunities, but that wouldn’t explain why seemingly average and under-privileged people go on to achieve greatness. Could it have something to do with time management?

Oprah Winfrey is a household name but who would have thought a child born to a teenage mother and raised in abject poverty would go on to be an international media mogul? With nothing but her time to invest, Oprah spent it wisely landing a job in radio while still in high school and spent a considerable amount of time studying to become an honours student.

Oprah has since hosted an internationally acclaimed self-titled talk-show, been nominated for an Academy Award, co-authored a number of books, started a magazine and a speciality channel in the US. There are many rationales for her success but none of Oprah’s accomplishments would have been possible if she hadn’t invested her time. In other words, true success could have more to do with time management than who you know.

Here are a few ways to improve your time management skills…

• Get it down on paper - Have you ever made a list of your long-term and short-term goals? If not, today is the perfect day to start. A long term goal could be, ‘start my own successful business’ while a short term goal might be, ‘improve my Business management marks by 20% this semester.’ Keep your list of goals somewhere safe and preferably somewhere you will see them daily. Stay on track by writing a to-do list at the beginning of the week. Break your weekly to-do list into 10 tasks to complete each day with the most important tasks being in the top five of each day.

• Make a date with your dreams  - Schedule activities that will help you reach your goals, whether it’s scheduling a study session or a workout. Make appointments with yourself by writing them in your diary or saving them as alerts on your phone. Be specific about the activity, time and place. Don’t let anything, unless it’s urgent, disturb you.

• Eliminate time wasters - You may think it’s fun to stalk your ex on Facebook, keep up with what the Kardashians are doing or take a few hundred photos of your cat, but if it’s not bringing you closer to realising your dreams, it’s a waste of valuable time. Make time for fun and enjoy a little healthy distraction in moderation (stalking your ex online is not healthy by the way) but make sure you know when it’s time to call it quits and get back to working on your goals.

When it comes to the best approach to time management, Oprah Winfrey sums it up beautifully when she said, “Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.”

So what are you waiting for? Go make every moment count!

The first programme started in January and the intention is to repeat the programme every six months to give as many Munsieville residents as possible the chance to participate and become involved in the Thoughtful Path Munsieville.

The goal of the academy is to help cultivate emerging leaders of Munsieville and impart valuable skills from computer literacy, to communication and project management skills. The programme helps members of the community boost their employability, while building positive role models for the vulnerable youth of Munsieville.

It is expected that participants of the Leadership Academy remain involved with Project Hope UK by partnering with community initiatives that aim to keep the children of Munsieville safe, healthy and happy.

A study by Princeton researcher Alan Krueger found that we’re at our happiest when involved in engaging leisure activities. In an USA Today article, clinical psychologist Penny Donnefeld said play reduces stress hormones in the bloodstream. In short, making time for fun shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for children.

This is one of the reasons we hold a fun day during orientation. This year students had the opportunity to try out target shooting, braai, ride an electric rodeo bull and pose with fun props in our photo booth. By the end of the day new friendships were formed and students got their 2012 academic year off to a brilliant start. Read more about fun day by clicking here.

During various fun social responsibility projects, we’ve seen carefree students transformed into concerned citizens. Last year we hosted parties for the children of From the Heart nursery school in Princess informal settlement in Roodepoort. Student volunteers changed from cool college kids into clowns, comics, playmates and caregivers. As they waved goodbye, our students left with new outlooks and a sense of joy that comes from letting their guard down and playing. Read more about this project by clicking here.

Held on campus on 2 March, our students joined the 9th national CANSA Shavathon and raised just over R1500 for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

While some of our students dared to shave their heads, those who wanted to maintain their crowning glory had a few fun flashes of wash-out colour sprayed onto their locks instead. To make the event even more fun, we decided to throw a beach party and created our own ‘beach’ on campus with slip and slide!

Cancer is one of the major causes of death in the developed and developing world. Few people have been untouched by the disease and many know at least one person who has fought cancer. Synonymous with the treatment of cancer is hair loss and this is why shaving one’s head has become a symbolic gesture of support for those who have fought, survived or are currently fighting cancer.

This year the CANSA Shavathon was held in over 400 organisations and over 300 shopping centres throughout South Africa. We’re proud of being part of the nationwide initiative to raise funds in support of cancer research and awareness programmes.
