If the thought of public speaking sends you into a flat panic, you’re not alone. According to studies, 75% of adults suffer from speech anxiety. Conquer your fears and deliver better presentations using our five top public speaking tips.

You’ve been asked to present your idea to a boardroom or lecture hall full of people. It’s your chance to shine but you’re more worried about sweating and stammering through your speech!

If the thought of public speaking sends you into a flat panic, you’re not alone. According to studies, 75% of adults suffer from speech anxiety.

But while few people enjoy public speaking or can deliver presentations without feeling nervous, it’s integral to building a successful career. So to help you conquer your fears and deliver better presentations, here are our five top public speaking tips…

Keep it simple – When planning your presentation, try to keep it simple. Don’t over complicate your presentation with intelligent sounding words you stammer over or technology you don’t know how to use.

Practice makes perfect – Read through your speech and deliver your presentation to family and friends for practice. Ideally you want to know your speech so well that if you lost it on route to the office on the big day, you could stand and deliver it from memory.

Keep it on cue – Write out numbered cue cards with keywords or your own shorthand version of your presentation. Use your cue cards to guide you as you speak, it’s far neater than reading from sheets of paper and will help keep you on track.

Dress for success – Pick a comfortable and professional outfit to wearing during your presentation and make sure it’s ironed and ready on the day. Clothes can really make or break one’s confidence so make sure you feel good about your outfit.

Make friends with the audience – Try to think of the audience as your friends – it will help you smile and make eye contact naturally while you speak. Remember, regardless of titles or designer suits, the audience are made up of people just like you.

For the latest news from Damelin West Rand, career and study advice, follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Like many part-time students, Anneli Venter was inspired to study further while working.“I was working as a debtor’s clerk when I realised that I had a knack for figures.”

She studied part-time at Damelin West Rand starting with the ICB Skills Programme in Bookkeeping to Trial Balance and in 2011 completed the ICB Diploma in Technical Financial Accounting. Today she is the Financial Manager of The GSI Group Africa (Pty) Ltd, a world-class manufacturer of agricultural equipment and services.

While in her first year of study, Anneli was promoted to Junior Bookkeeper and it wasn’t long until she was promoted again to Senior Bookkeeper.

“I would not have been promoted so quickly if it wasn’t for my studies,” she says, “It made me realise how import it is to further your education and gain the necessary experience.”

Anneli left her position as Senior Bookkeeper to join the GSI Group Africa as a bookkeeper where she was promoted to the position of Financial Manager.

Her responsibilities include the monthly management of accounts, tax calculations, budget preparation, approval and checking of transactions like salaries and payments, internal control, contracts relevant within the organisation, monthly reviews and compiling reports to be sent to the GSI Group head office in the USA.

It’s known that accounting requires accuracy and has a reputation as ‘boring job’, but Anneli says her profession is far from dull! “Every day brings a new challenge!”

Anneli accredits her career acceleration to Damelin West Rand, “They helped me climb the corporate ladder and find the confidence to achieve my goals, knowing that I have the correct tools to do so.”

Her advice to high school graduates?

“Further your studies as soon as you can, it will only make things easier for you in the future,” advises Anneli, “I lived and worked in the UK for two years, which was great, but in a way I regret not perusing my studies sooner.”

Her experience on campus was good, “Damelin West Rand looks after their students and I often found the student consultant Petro Welgemoed would go out of her way to assist me,” says Anneli who found Saturday morning classes manageable in her busy schedule. “My course facilitators were highly skilled, knew their subjects well and made it easy to understand the work.”

“To succeed in a career, it is important to always stay hungry for knowledge, learn how to perform under pressure and continuously challenge yourself to grow. Damelin West Rand is a great starting point.”

“Rather than think about ‘the passion,’ free yourself up to think about a portfolio of passions,” advises Randy Komisar, author the best-seller, The Monk and the Riddle, a book about how a Silicon Valley insider gained success his own terms, “…the task is to marry that portfolio of passions to the opportunities in front of you.”

You’ve probably heard the famous saying by Confucius, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” but just how do you choose the perfect career, or more accurately, the course of study to get you there?

Well you could start by identifying the activities that make you feel ‘in the element.’

Sir Ken Robinson, author of the New York Times best seller The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, describes the element as, “… Being at the point where what you’re naturally good at comes together with your passion.”

But what does it feel like to be ‘in the element?’

Sir Robinsons says one of the ways to tell is if time seems to shift, an hour might feel like just five minutes. In other words, ‘time flies when you’re having fun!’

Do you know what makes you feel most in the element? If you’re not sure, write out all the things you feel passionate about and a list of all things you are good at. Once you have your ‘portfolio of passions,’ think about opportunities which you could explore. Have a look around you, read job advertisements and talk to people you who work or study in any of the fields that interest you.

“Look right in the foreground,”says Komisar, “What’s there? How do they link up with the passions I have today?”

Sometimes the answer is right in front of you as it was for Damelin West Rand graduate Bernadette Pistorius.“I had no idea what I wanted to do after school,” recalls Bernadette who looked in her foreground and noticed our course offerings. “Damelin West Rand seemed like a good option. It was close to home at the time and their courses are nationally recognised.”

Bernadette studied Conference, Exhibition & Event management and on completion, studied Entrepreneurship. Today’s she’s marketing manager of Mafikeng Mall. “Studying at Damelin taught me how to present myself professionally.” Click here to read her success story.

“In many ways studying at Damelin West Rand taught me how to be consistent, positive and passionate about the work I do,” said Toka Matla, who studied End-User Technology and completed a two-year PC Engineering course with Damelin West Rand.

“In many ways studying at Damelin West Rand taught me how to be consistent, positive and passionate about the work I do,” said Toka Matla who studied End-User Technology in 2008 and completed a two-year PC Engineering course with Damelin West Rand in 2010.

Toka now works as a junior technician at Leonora Systems where he resolves network and printer issues, maintains servers, upgrades software applications and troubleshoots computer problems.

“The qualifications I acquired built a foundation for me to do my CompTia international qualification which has allowed me to handle any network environment and operating system worldwide!”
At Damelin West Rand we aim to equip learners for the working world, and to this end each module Toka completed included real-life scenarios.

“The aim was to successfully troubleshoot problems in the workplace, come up with the best solutions and action them efficiently,” he says. “We worked through modules systematically and were given opportunities to ask questions. We also went through each test and assignment to correct any problems we might have encountered.”

Toka believes that one of the most powerful tools known to man is knowledge. He recommends Damelin West Rand and says, “If you want quality education and to be successful in your own way, then Damelin is for you!”

He advises matric graduates to get a qualification after high school. “Study, aim to do something you feel passionate about and always strive to be the best in what you do!”

It sounds like Toka has figured out the key to success and we wish him all the best with his career.
